In this podcast, Dr. Adela Solis, IDRA senior education associate is interviewed by Bradley Scott, Ph. D. director of the IDRA south central collaborative for equity, about supporting new teachers. Dr. Solis defined a new teachers as one that has been in teaching three years or less and one that needs support beyond the first year. Being successful, effective, and retention are three things that new teachers should strive for. There are different things leaders of a school look for in new teachers including if the person is ready to teacher, are they a content expert, and will they be able to learn the culture of the school system. New teachers need to interact and observe other teachers in the school and also do self-assessments to see how they think they are doing. New teachers also need support within the school system. Usually the new teacher will have another teacher as a coach/mentor to turn to for support and questions. Dr. Solis also offered strategies for new teachers to be successful in their classrooms. Winning over the class by creating a vision of success with the students and also creating a classroom where the students wonder and are excited for learning, are both examples of strategies Dr. Solis suggested. She also suggested that new teachers become a part of the school by observing and respecting other teachers, and by staying positive.
